Mark’s story

Mark  joined us as a volunteer mentor in August 2017 and has just completed a foundation degree in mentoring.  His Volunteer work has enabled him to deliver sessions in schools and use his invaluable experience to mentor young people 1-2-1.  Mark’s hard work and dedication to making a difference in the local community, have been inspirational to the young people that he has mentored.

“I have worked as a volunteer over the years in numerous places, while studying, however mentoring young people with Ynot Aspire has become my passion.

Volunteering has helped me gain confidence. It has also given me the opportunity to try something new and build a real sense of achievement, while meeting new people and making new friends. Volunteering has helped me become part of a community. It helps me when I can have a real and valuable positive effect on people, communities, and society in general. Volunteering has helped me learn new skills, gain experience, qualifications, challenge myself to try something different, achieve personal goals, practice using my skills and have fun.

I have enjoyed the school sessions Know Fear and Know Stigma. My session educating young people on drugs and alcohol awareness gives me a chance to share my story. Mentoring young people with Ynot Aspire, gave me the chance to support people who are younger and less experienced than me. When I share my knowledge and experiences it can change the world for that person. One of the greatest gifts of value you can give someone is to help them get something into their imagination. I have had this done for me multiple times, and I have done this for others. When you give people new ideas and open doors for them, it truly changes their life.”
