A Work Experience Journey

This is a post written by our Year 10 work experience student from the Hollins, who joined us this week to find out more about what we do and learn new skills to help in their future work journey.

Learning new skills

This is my journey for work experience.  I did my work experience for 3 days at Ynot Aspire, which is a charity that primarily helps children’s mental health and well-being.

On my first day I had no idea what I was going to be doing as I found out from my teacher that it was a charity.  I looked at a another person’s work experience journey from here and I had begun to kind of understand what I was going to be doing.  I was very worried when I first arrived, I was afraid that I was going to mess something up or do the wrong thing.  It was something I was wrongly worried about, as everyone there is really kind.

On my first day there had my induction with Sharon Hendrie, who was my contact.  We did a lot of things I wouldn’t have thought of even thinking about, like when I first started listening she told me the basic things like where the fire exits are and where the first aid people are and where the first aid kit is (Health and Safety).  I was prepared for that but I didn’t expect to learn about all the policies she told me about!  Some I didn’t even know, such the lone working policy which is a policy used to protect the people working alone.  Later, I went back to Hollins on my work experience with Nikki and Kyle, who did a group work about exam preparations.  After we did this, I participated in a team meeting that is usually only held on Tuesdays  In this meeting we talked about the referrals that they got.  This confused me for a while until I realised that they were sent by schools to get help for their students.  Something I respect about the meeting is that they never used the real names as I was there.   This was so that an invasion of the persons privacy wouldn’t happen (Data Protection and Confidentiality).

On my second day, I came in a little early as one of my teachers came to see how I was getting on and I was more than happy to tell her how it was going.  I showed her my logbook where I had been filling in my experience at Ynot.  After she had left, I went to town centre with Nikki as I was going to write a post on the development of Accrington town centre.  When I went down with Nikki, I talked with quite a few people about their opinions on what’s happening in Accrington.  I was honestly a bit nervous but it turned out okay as I got what needed to write a good post (I would like to think so).  After me and Nikki got back, I got to writing my post and I talked with Nikki about what I was planning to write in this and she suggested that I should also talk about how its mental health week and so I am.

So everyone who’s reading this, remember everyone struggles but it’s what we do after the struggle that counts because, if we always gave up then it wouldn’t help.  So remember, just never give up on you and care as much as you do for others for yourself and always remember that.  Now the day I’m writing this my last day so far I’ve finished my post on development of Accrington town centre as well as this currently that I’m writing . It was quite a lot to write in the amount of time I had I normally don’t type on computers so I’m not a very quick typer . I have had the opportunity to listen into a CAN (Community Action Network) meeting between a lot of different charities and companies, which I am very grateful for.

So thank you everyone who is at Ynot aspire for being so welcoming and kind thank you everyone!
