We’re really looking forward to this year’s CHARM inter-schools event, that will celebrate the talents and achievements of young people throughout Hyndburn. The event presents an excellent opportunity for young people to gain recognition for all their talents and achievements and we run it in partnership with Carer’s Link Lancashire.
We were extremely sad to hear about the closure of the Civic Theatre, which has always provided a fabulous community hub and great entertainment in Hyndburn. As we’ve always held our CHARM event there, we’ve had to get creative for this year’s event. The forum meetings are taking place across each of the secondary schools, which has provided a great opportunity for our forum members to experience what the other schools are like (and they’ve all provided excellent refreshments which is a bonus!)
Our forum members are well on with their planning for the event and are all really enthusiastic and full of great ideas. They have decided on their pre-show roles which include:
- Publicity and media,
- Programme/ticket/poster design,
- Event design
- Raffle prizes.
They have also started thinking about what they would like their roles to be on the night, which they have decided will have a 1980’s theme. The whole event is planned and run by our 12 forum members, 2 from each secondary school in Hyndburn. They will run front of house, backstage and stage crew, sound and lighting and presenting on the night.
Schools have been invited to nominate the pupils from years 7-11, that they feel deserve an award for their achievements. There are several categories in which pupils can receive nominations:
Young Voice Award sponsored by Stepping Stones
For a young person with a powerful voice who has changed something about their school or their community that has been a benefit to others.
Sporting Individual Award sponsored by Hyndburn Leisure
The recipient of this award will be a young person who gives 100% to their sport or activity and has aspirations to reach their goals.
Inspiration Award sponsored by Education Business Partnership (NW) Ltd
This award recognises young people who are doing something special and inspirational. We know that there are some fantastic young people out there who do challenging and amazing things and don’t always get the recognition that they deserve.
Young Carer Award sponsored by Onward Homes
The recipient of this award will be person who gives his/her time to caring for someone. This could be a family member or friend who is suffering from a long-term illness or injury. It could possibly be that they have helped someone through a difficult time in their life.
Talent Award sponsored by McDonalds
Alongside of this, schools will be holding their own in-house talent competitions and the winner from each school will then be put forward to perform at the CHARM final. The judges (made up from representatives from our sponsors) will then decide on a winner on the night.
Our big celebration event is to be held on Thursday 21st March at The Hollins at 7:00pm.. All awards and certificates will be given to every nominee and there will be a winner and runner-up in each category. Judges will then decide on a Young Person of the Year from all winners. This award is being kindly sponsored by Breaks Wealth Management.
As both of our charities rely on fundraising and donations, there’s also an award for the school that raises the most money leading up to the event. The Hollins walked away with this award last year, which is why we asked them to host the final this year, but competition is going to be fierce this year and they will have their work cut out to retain their title!
It’s shaping up to be a fantastic event and tickets will be available through schools soon. We will keep you posted.
