The Marathon des Sables has been described as the toughest footrace on the planet. Each year runners from around the globe travel to the Sahara Desert to tackle the gruelling multi-stage event. The runners must cross the hostile terrain of the Sahara, over 6 days covering 156 miles. It is physically and mentally exhausting as runners cross the red hot sands, never ending sand dunes and rocky terrain. The experience is like no other and is an extremely difficult challenge.
Due to the pandemic, the race was cancelled last year, however, the rescheduled race started on the 3rd of October. Each year our goal is to have a runner from the local area to represent Ynot Aspire in this ultra-marathon to raise funding for our charity. This year it’s the turn of Nick Cook to take on the colossal task of competing in the Marathon des Sables.
The funds raised by Nick will enable us to continue running our services for young people in the local community. We provide a wide range of support for young people. We run services in schools like a drop-in session to talk to one of our staff or volunteers, access to counselling services and have trained up mental health champions to offer peer support. In addition we also offer advice and support for young people who are at risk of becoming homeless.
We would like to wish Nick the best of luck in completing this monumental task and fully appreciate his efforts in raising funds for our charity. We will be cheering Nick all the way over the finishing, our work would not be possible without the commitment and drive of people who strive to make positive changes to the local community.
