Last year Paul Breaks took part in the 33rd annual Marathon des Sables to raise funds for Ynot Aspire. Paul’s aim is to sponsor a local runner each year to take part in the Marathon, in order to raise further funding for Ynot Aspire. In April it will be the turn of Nicholas Cook to take on the most gruelling marathon in the world.
The Marathon takes place over 6 days, with the unbearable sun beating down on runners as they cross the cruel Sahara terrain. The Marathon des Sables has been described as an ‘ultra-marathon’, with courses ranging between 150 and 156 miles.
Race organisers spend up to a month planning the course for the marathon and the routes vary from year to year. The exact route of the course is kept a secret until the day before the event starts, adding to the sense of astonishment and unexpectedness facing participants of the marathon.
Nick who is a self-employed roofer from Accrington said:
“I’ve been fell mountain running for a few years now, usually enjoying the scenery all around Great Britain. MDS has always been on the bucket list, but never thought that I would get the opportunity to actually do it and jumped at the chance when Paul asked me! After completing lots of long-distance endurance races, I have realised I enjoy testing my body and mind”
Nick was inspired to take part in The Marathon des Sables and raise money for Ynot Aspire after speaking to Paul:
“After having a brief conversation with Paul and listening to what the charity does for young people in the area, it would be good to spread some awareness about all the hard work that YnotAspire do and help raise some vital funds to keep the charity running”
We would like to wish Nick the best of luck in completing this monumental task and fully appreciate his efforts in raising funds for our charity. We will be cheering Nick all the way over the finishing line in April, our work would not be possible without the commitment and drive of people who strive to make positive changes to the local community.
